When it comes to mowing Sir Walter turf, sharp mower blades are crucial for a good cut, blunt blades can cause tearing at the top of the grass blade. Like all warm season running grass types,  Sir Walter Buffalo will need regular dethatching when the thatch layer becomes thick and spongy. Only dethatch warm-season grasses when they are in their peak growing period and there is no chance of frost. Remember the 1/3 rule and never cut off more than 1/3 of the grass blade in one mowing. The recommended mowing height for Buffalo is 20-40mm.

It’s important to get water on your newly laid Sir Walter turf promptly. The first water should have the soil nice and drenched, after that it’s 2-3 times a day to keep the lawn damp and prevent it from drying out. Once you have established your Sir Walter turf, you’ll only need to water in the warmer months or if you notice the lawn becoming dry in areas.

Fertilising is best done in from Spring through to Autumn when SWB is in its peak growing period.

Sir Walter turf will go into a dormancy state over the winter months and requires minimal maintenance. Heavy frost can cause frost burn and browning off. Spring and summer should be met with seasonal aeration and dethatching.
