Choosing the Best Turf for Your Geelong Property

Before picking a turf variety for your yard, parkland, or school oval, consider the following:

  • How many hours of direct sun does the area receive each day?
  • Are you after a low-maintenance lawn or happy to mow and fertilise regularly?
  • Will the grass be mainly decorative, or will it see pets, kids, or weekend backyard cricket?

Knowing how much sun and wear your lawn will get helps you work out the right turf for you. Get help to choose using our turf selector tool to help remove the guesswork.

Catering to Geelong’s Soil Type Spectrum

From the coastal stretches of the Bellarine Peninsula to the elevated estates of Highton and Waurn Ponds, soil conditions vary widely across Greater Geelong. As a leading name among suppliers for Melbourne, Geelong and regional Victoria, we offer a broad range of turf types tailored to local conditions and growing profiles.

Sandy soils

Found across the Bellarine Peninsula, including Clifton Springs, Ocean Grove and Leopold, sandy soils drain quickly but lack water and nutrient retention. Adding organic matter during installation helps improve turf performance.

Recommended varieties:

  • TifTuf Bermuda – A standout in sandy Geelong soils, offering exceptional drought resilience and quick recovery from wear.
  • Sir Grange Zoysia – Ideal for well-drained sites, delivering a premium lawn look with low water and mowing needs.
  • Sir Walter Buffalo – Handles sandy conditions well with a high salt tolerance for coastal conditions. Its broad leaves offer proven performance in partly shaded areas.

Loam Soils

The Geelong region boasts some of Victoria’s best soils, particularly in the Barrabool Hills and parts of the Bellarine Peninsula. Areas like Ceres, Highton, and Drysdale feature rich, well-draining loams that are ideal for establishing a healthy lawn. These soils retain nutrients effectively and can support most turf types without significant modification.

All turf varieties perform well in loam. Simply choose the right match based on sun, usage, and look.

Heavy Clay soils

Heavier clay soils are typical in inland suburbs like Highton, Waurn Ponds and Armstrong Creek. These soils hold water but often need conditioning to prevent compaction and support deep root growth.

It’s worth improving clay soil by breaking up the ground and adding gypsum in powder or liquid form. It’s hard work, but the results are worth it.

Recommended varieties:

  • RTF Tall Fescue A great match for clay-rich sites, with deep roots, winter colour and good shade performance.
  • Sir Walter Buffalo Adapts reliably to heavier soil with thick coverage and consistent year-round performance.
  • TifTuf Bermuda Will succeed in treated clay soil, combining drought hardiness with a soft, fine-leaf finish.

Not Sure What Soil You’re Working With?

The ribbon test is an easy way to get a feel for your soil type. Take a moist handful of soil and press it between your fingers to form a ribbon.

  • If it stretches out smoothly, it’s likely clay.
  • If it breaks at around 2cm,  you’ve probably got loam soil (lucky you).
  • If it doesn’t hold together at all, it’s probably a sandy mix.

This quick test can help determine how well your soil retains moisture, or contact our team, and we’ll point you in the right direction.

Our clients routinely tell us the service was first class – and the turf speaks for itself!

It’s always hard to see your beloved patch of lawn in a bad state, but in these circumstances, some yellowing and thinning is reasonable to expect, given the Spring period is the start of the key growth phase for most grasses.

RTF Tall Fescue is a hardy cool season grass ideal for waterlogged or cooler areas thanks to its deep roots and self-repairing ability. It is renowned for its ability to retain a lush green colour year-round, including during the winter months.

To help your lawn recover after wet and cold seasons:

  • Aerate to relieve compaction and improve drainage
  • Get rid of lawn patches that are completely dead (if the grass is brown, brittle, and comes out easily with a gentle tug, it’s likely past the point of no return). Fill in with new turf sod of the same variety, either by buying new or transplanting pieces of live grass from healthier sections of the lawn.
  • Top dress with sandy loam to level low spots and boost airflow
  • Remove dead thatch to discourage fungal growth
  • Apply a targeted fungicide (such as one containing azoxystrobin or propiconazole) if fungal issues appear
  • Use a slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy regrowth
  • Mow high until growth strengthens

Improving drainage during installation and choosing a resilient variety will go a long way toward preventing cold-season damage in future.

The best way to get rid of lawn weeds is to maintain a healthy, dense lawn that crowds out invaders. Spot treat with a selective herbicide that targets broadleaf weeds without damaging your turf. For stubborn infestations, consider a blanket spray with a suitable herbicide for your turf variety. Always follow label directions, and avoid mowing right before or after application for best results. Regular mowing, proper fertilising and seasonal aeration can also reduce weed pressure over time.

Have you noticed thinning grass, spongy patches or lawn birds scratching at the turf? You may have a grub problem, such as African black beetle larvae. These pests live just beneath the surface and feed on the roots, causing visible damage and inviting birds to dig.

To check for lawn grubs:

  • Hot soapy water test (at dusk): Pour a bucket of warm water with a dash of dishwashing liquid over a suspected patch. If grubs are present, they’ll wriggle to the surface within 10 minutes.
  • Wet towel test (overnight): Lay a damp towel or hessian sack on the lawn in the evening. Check underneath in the morning for grubs or caterpillars hiding from the light.

If you confirm you have a pest infestation, apply a registered insecticide containing ingredients like acelepryn or bifenthrin as per the instructions. For ongoing issues, consider a preventative treatment in late spring or early summer. Healthy lawns also recover faster from grub damage, so regular fertilising and proper mowing helps too.

To get your lawn off to a great start, prepare the soil by clearing any debris, levelling the ground, and improving drainage if needed. Apply 150mm of sandy loam with added fertilising lawn starter supplied. The turf will benefit from this slow-release feeding during the early growth phase, strengthening the roots and ensuring thick coverage. Once the turf is in place, your yard looks sensational already

Ensure you water it well, keeping it moist over the first few weeks, and avoiding heavy foot traffic until the roots have established. For a complete guide, check out our blog on how to install natural turf.
