Golf Course Turf Grass Types Covering Tee to Cup

The selection, quality and maintenance of turf used on the links is integral to providing a place for players to enjoy their hobby and improve their golf game. Private golf clubs, as well as community-run public courses, can rely on our quality options for golf turf. Putting green needs repair? Rolling out a new back 9?

Our select range offers something for every course at a price point that’s realistic. Look at the options below to see what’s on offer:

tiftuf lawn

Unmatched drought tolerance, rapid wear recovery, and performance at mowing heights as low as 3mm make TifTuf a proven performer on golf courses across Australia. Long used for tees and fairways, StrathAyr helped a country Victorian club become the first in the state to install TifTuf on putting greens—opening new potential for water-restricted clubs to maintain green quality without high maintenance costs.

Part of the fescue family of grasses, this specially engineered cultivar is well-suited for planting out rough areas of your course. It offers excellent cool-season performance and shade tolerance, plus excellent self-repairing properties thanks to its characteristic rhizomes. RTF Tall Fescue is great for lower-maintenance zones or less-trafficked fairways near tree lines, providing a self-sustaining option with a distinct appearance. Deep roots aid survival through dry spells.

Eureka Kikuyu turf

The go-to workhorse for high-traffic golf course tees and fairways in full sun, Eureka Premium VG Kikuyu delivers outstanding durability and the fastest wear recovery. Its vigorous growth ensures rapid divot repair across busy Victorian courses. While demanding regular mowing for optimal playing quality, its robustness and cost-effectiveness make it a practical choice to create resilient surfaces where rapid establishment is key for course management using reliable grass stock.

Increasingly specified for premium golf course tees, fairways, and surrounds, Sir Grange Zoysia delivers dense, high-quality turf with minimal inputs. Its exceptionally fine leaf, impressive shade tolerance, and low water/fertiliser needs suit these demanding playing areas, providing an excellent ball lie within varied golf landscapes. While slower growing, its reduced mowing offers maintenance savings, helping enhance the course’s visual appeal with a lush, professional finish.

Golf Putting Green Turf

Golf green turf grass is undoubtedly the top turf priority for most golf courses. A true and smooth putting surface is key to a good putting game. While traditionally bentgrass varieties have dominated the market, recent trials of Bermuda TifTuf, which was maintained at lengths as low as 3mm and treated with a plant growth regulator (PGR), have shown immense promise as a golf putting turf. Not only can it match the performance of legacy varieties of golf turf, putting green water usage can be drastically cut due to TifTuf’s outstanding drought tolerance.

Fairways

Forming the main playing corridors across Victoria, fairway turf must provide golfers with a consistently good ball lie while enduring traffic and environmental stress. Wear tolerance and good drought resistance are key priorities for maintaining quality course conditions. High-performing options like TifTuf Bermuda (for drought/wear), rapid-recovering Eureka Kikuyu, or low-input Sir Grange Zoysia effectively meet these demands for the game.

Teeing Grounds

Teeing grounds must withstand constant damage as club heads dig divots, combined with heavy foot and cart traffic, demanding extremely durable turf with rapid recovery capabilities. Maintaining a dense, stable surface is essential for golfers needing a clean setup. For these high-impact zones, the fast repair and proven toughness of Eureka Kikuyu and TifTuf Bermuda make them outstanding choices, ensuring reliable play starts hole after hole.

Roughs

Defining the course outline and challenging recovery shots in Victoria, roughs require distinct grass types that contrast with fairways, while needing less maintenance. RTF Tall Fescue is specifically suited for this role, offering a different texture and managing well with lower inputs. It effectively balances presenting a fair golf challenge with the need for water conservation and reduced operational costs across these extensive course areas.

Golf Grass Turf FAQs

For high-performing TifTuf Bermuda putting greens, a growing medium made mostly of specific sand is best. Green construction often follows international golf standards (like the Australian Golf Course Superintendents Association – AGCSA) to enhance drainage and aeration vital for healthy turf mown very low. Lightly topdressing with a compatible sand on a regular basis is critical to managing organic matter (thatch), keeping the putting surface smooth and firm for reliable play.

Bentgrass varieties are traditional for elite golf greens due to their fine texture, density, and upright growth, ensuring a true ball roll with minimal “grain” when mown very low, which is essential for a quality putting green.

However, TifTuf Bermuda presents a modern alternative. Maintained ultra-low (to 3mm) using tools like Plant Growth Regulators (PGRs) on a regular basis. TifTuf also provides an excellent, largely grain-free putting surface. Critically, its superior drought tolerance means it requires significantly less water than typically thirstier Bentgrass, alongside offering better heat/wear resistance. This makes it a durable, resource-efficient option, especially for courses facing water restrictions due to drought or budgetary constraints.
