Sir Grange Turf

A low-maintenance grass boasting a beautiful dark green leaf colour, Sir Grange Zoysia is as luxurious as it is practical.

This fine-bladed premium turf is arguably one of the world’s best-looking grasses. But far from a high-maintenance diva, Sir Grange is remarkably easy to keep happy. It’s a very slow-growing lawn type with high drought tolerance, requiring less mowing and water than other grass types (it also needs very little fertiliser).

For the best results, Sir Grange grass must be laid on soil that has good drainage (100mm of sandy soil is highly recommended) and requires full sun in the cooler, southern parts of Australia.

Preparation & Installation

Zoysia Sir Grange is a slow-growing, fine-leaf, warm-season variety that will provide a superb-looking lawn to those who are willing to be patient during the prolonged establishment phase. Sir Grange Zoysia requires a full sun position and a sandy, well-draining soil at least 100-200mm deep. The roots take longer to get down deep into the soil, so water multiple times a day during the early establishment period. Once established, this turf will require much less water, mowing and maintenance.

Mowing

Being a very slow-growing lawn, minimal mowing is needed compared to other turf varieties. When your Sir Grange lawn gets long in the warmer months, mow between 15-30mm, and remember to change up the mowing pattern to encourage upright growth.

Watering

An automated watering system is highly recommended for Sir Grange Zoysia. It is very important to give Sir Grange deeper waterings during the first 3-6 months from installation to encourage deep root establishment. You should water for at least 30-45 minutes regularly until fully established.

Seasonal Maintenance & Fertilising

Once Sir Grange is established owners will reap the rewards of this famous turf. Sir Grange maintenance needs are minimal. It needs up to 75% less nitrogen than other grasses, meaning minimal fertilising. It is recommended to install Sir Grange Zoysia during the warmer months of the year (October to March) and not the colder months (April to September), especially in the cooler states.

The ‘Hard As Nails’ Soft-Leaf Turf

Sir Grange Zoysia combines a soft, premium finish with exceptional qualities that make it a highly resilient turf once it’s had time to properly take root. While freshly laid new grass requires careful management during its early growth phase, including full direct sunlight and deep watering to a depth of 150mm. It rewards your efforts with a beautiful lawn that offers impressive high-wear tolerance and the resilience to handle Australia’s harsh conditions.

Once matured, Sir Grange exhibits outstanding durability, including resistance to sub-freezing temperatures and periods of winter dormancy. It is bred to perform in demanding environments, providing a lush, green appearance even through frost and cold snaps. Proper soil preparation, drainage, and reduced traffic during the initial months are critical to unlocking the full strength and longevity of your Sir Grange turf.

Displays High Shade Tolerance Once Established +

Sir Grange has impressive shade tolerance among warm-season grass varieties once fully established. While it needs strong direct sunlight during the first few months to build a healthy, deep root system, it can thrive in shaded areas later on. To give your Sir Grange the best start, trim back overhanging trees and maintain clear, sunny conditions until it has properly taken root. This is particularly important in cooler climates like Victoria, where reduced sunlight can slow establishment.

High Drought Tolerance +

Another hallmark of Sir Grange Zoysia is its impressive drought resistance compared to many other grass varieties. After proper establishment, it requires less frequent watering and can maintain its health and appearance through extended dry periods. This makes it an ideal choice for homeowners seeking a low-maintenance, water-wise lawn that still delivers exceptional aesthetic appeal year-round.

Beware of Imitators: Make Sure Your Zoysia Sir Grange is Genuine

Sir Grange Zoysia turf is the globe’s top-selling Zoysia grass, widely used in homes and public spaces, including many world-famous projects. Sir Grange enjoys a stellar reputation, and it’s little wonder copycats are trying to cash in on its name. Some turf producers attempt to pass off inferior grasses, ranging from unrelated Zoysia varieties to entirely different species like Couch or Kikuyu. You may see misleading names like Zeon Zoysia, Zion, or other lookalikes. These substitutes are not approved or recognised by the original breeder, US-based Blade Runners Farms (BRF).

Why Buy From a Lawn Solutions Australia Member Like StrathAyr?

Sir Grange turf is available exclusively through licensed growers who are members of Lawn Solutions Australia (LSA), ensuring you receive premium-quality turf backed by expert support. It is the only Zoysia variety in Australia that meets the rigorous standards of the International Turfgrass Genetic Assurance Program (ITGAP) through Blade Runner Farms (BRF), and is sold solely as AusGAP-certified Sir Grange Zoysia grass. If it does not carry AusGAP and LSA certifications, it is not genuine Sir Grange.

The Importance of AusGAP Certification

AusGAP certification guarantees that Sir Grange Zoysia meets the highest standards for turf quality, genetic purity, and environmental responsibility. Every roll is thoroughly assessed to ensure superior performance and consistency.

Imitation products like “Zeon Zoysia” lack the assurance of genuine BRF Zeon Zoysia, which is exclusively sold as AusGAP-certified Sir Grange Zoysia. Developed by Blade Runner Farms, it is protected under ITGAP to maintain its superior characteristics. For a certified, premium lawn, only deal with Lawn Solutions Australia members like StrathAyr, accredited producers and distributors of Zoysia Grass Melbourne-wide.

Sir Grange Zoysia Grass FAQs

Is Sir Grange the same as BRF Zeon Zoysia? +

Yes. Sir Grange is the exclusive Australian release of BRF Zeon Zoysia, developed by Blade Runner Farms (BRF) in the USA. It is the only Zoysia grass in Australia sold under licence from the breeder and certified through the AusGAP program. Any grass sold as “Zeon” in Australia without this backing is not the real thing.

When’s the best time of year to install Sir Grange in Victoria? +

Sir Grange should always be installed during the growing season, ideally spring through summer, when soil temperatures are warm and growth is active. Avoid installing in winter, especially in cooler climates like Victoria, as the grass will struggle to establish properly in cold or damp conditions.

What is Zoysia grass? +

Zoysia is a warm-season grass genus native to parts of Asia and Australasia. Known for its fine-leaf texture, dense growth, and strong resilience, Zoysia offers a premium, low-maintenance lawn solution for Australian homeowners. It typically grows slower than other warm-season grasses like Couch and Kikuyu, but compensates with excellent drought resistance, fewer mowing requirements, and natural weed suppression. Zoysia varieties vary in their traits, from broader-leaf types with faster growth to finer-leafed, high-performance options bred for elite lawns and sports surfaces.

Where does Sir Grange fit into the Zoysia family? +

Sir Grange is a specially selected variety of Zoysia matrella, bred for outstanding appearance and performance. Compared to traditional Zoysia grasses, Sir Grange has an ultra-fine leaf, deep green colour, and superior shade and drought tolerance once established. Originally developed for world-class golf courses, it brings the same premium quality to home lawns, offering a soft, lush, and extremely hardy surface with minimal upkeep. Sir Grange represents the very top end of Zoysia turf options available in Australia today.
