How to Choose the Best Fertiliser for Your Lawn

Fertilising is essential for achieving a healthy lawn all year round. The right type of fertiliser depends on the variety of lawn you have, your local climate, the nutrients your soil needs and the current condition of your lawn. Below are some key considerations to keep in mind from the turf experts at StrathAyr.

Choose the Right Fertiliser

Each lawn fertiliser comes with three macronutrients: nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Depending on the type of lawn and soil quality, it will require a fertiliser that has a certain blend of these three nutrients to thrive. Find out the right balance your lawn needs depending on its variety, soil pH and specific symptoms.

Determine Lawn Variety

There are a wide range of grass turf varieties used across Australia, including:

  • RTF Tall Fescue – Fertilise your RTF Tall Fescue lawn at the start of each season with a high-nitrogen lawn food.
  • TifTuf Grass – Fertilise TifTuf Grass 3 times a year at a ¼ rate as too much nitrogen can encourage excessive leaf growth and require you to mow more often.
  • Eureka Kikuyu – Use a fertiliser rich in potassium and iron to protect Eureka Kikuyu grass from low winter temperatures. Fertilise 3 to 4 times a year in spring, early summer, and autumn to boost overall health.
  • Sir Walter Grass – Fertilise your Sir Walter grass twice a year in late summer and spring. Extra iron can also improve its overall health.
  • Blueblend Premium – Fertilise Blueblend Premium 4 times a year to maintain its excellent dark green appearance.
  • Sir Grange Zoysia – Requiring much less nutrients than other warm-season grasses, aim to fertilise your Sir Grange Zoysia turf at a ⅓ rate once a year between early spring and summer.

Speak to your local grass turf experts if you’re unsure what lawn variety you have or need more help understanding what your lawn needs.
