Warm Season Grasses: Benefits and Disadvantages

Warm season grasses such as Sir Walter Buffalo grass, Eureka Kikuyu grass, and TifTuf turf develop rapidly in warmer climates, making them a popular choice in Australia. The optimum temperature for these varieties is anywhere between 25-38°C. They still develop well at temperatures outside this range, but not as quickly.

Here at StrathAyr, we proudly supply all three of these brilliant warm season grasses. If you’re thinking about investing in a new lawn, here are some of the pros and cons of our favourites, to see if they’re right for your home.

Drought Tolerance

As you might expect, warm season grass varieties have high drought tolerance. If you need grass that thrives even with excessive sun exposure and dry, hot conditions, all three of these warm season grasses are perfect. With adequate watering to the newly laid turf, you can even start a new lawn during summer while benefiting from faster establishment, speedy root development, and sufficient maturity by winter.

Little Wear and Tear

Eureka Kikuyu turf, Sir Walter grass, and TifTuf grass are all perfect for high wear situations. If you have a backyard that sees a lot of activity from kids and pets, you won’t have to worry about the lawn getting damaged. The resilience and quick recovery that warmer season grasses offer make them a great choice for Australian homes.

Choose from Different Looks

Each of these warm season grasses offer different aesthetic qualities, so you can achieve a particular lawn appearance based on your preferences. TifTuf turf is a hybrid Bermuda grass with a very fine leaf blade and soft dense growth. Sir Walter turf on the other hand features much broader leaf grass blades.

Shade Tolerance

While Eureka Kikuyu grass requires full sun, other warm season grasses like Sir Walter buffalo and TifTuf grass are more resistant in shaded areas. This makes them ideal for lawns that receive less than 4-6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
