Tips for Your Most Healthy TifTuf Lawn

Preparation & Installation

Before installing TifTuf turf, it’s important to spend time and care getting the soil preparation right to ensure successful establishment and a level, neat-looking finish. TifTuf Bermuda grass is known for its fine leaf blade and dense growth. For your most healthy lawn, it’s recommended to maintain a lower height of cut than with small-to-medium leaf or broad-blade varieties. Consequently, any bumps or divots in the surface will be more visible, and inconsistencies can lead to unwanted scalping during mowing.

It pays to spend a little extra time during preparation to level the surface perfectly with a screed to even out any high or low areas and to lightly roll the soil to firm up the surface slightly to reduce any air pockets. To have your TifTuf Bermuda sit flush with pathways or paving, we recommend that you finish your soil level 15-20mm below.

Once your new turf is installed, it is important to water it immediately and give it daily waterings (twice daily if needed) to keep the soil moist until the roots have bedded down into the soil. Try to keep all traffic to a minimum until your lawn has established. This usually takes 3-4 weeks in the warmer months and even longer in the cooler months.

*Remember that turf is highly perishable and needs to be installed the day that it is delivered.

Mowing

TifTuf establishes itself extremely fast in the right conditions and will be ready for its first cut considerably sooner than other turf types. Your new lawn should be ready for the first mow once the turf can’t be lifted away from the soil anymore. Our recommended mowing tips to keep your lawn looking great suggest a height for TifTuf Bermuda of 15-30mm.

*TifTuf’s grass leaf grows very quickly, so remember to mow often enough to maintain the recommended mowing heights and never cut off more than 1/3 of the grass blade in one go.

Watering

rtf tall fescueOnce TifTuf has settled in, you can gradually back the watering off, and after the turf has fully established, less frequent, deeper waterings are recommended to encourage deeper roots and a more drought-resistant lawn.

It’s always a good idea to water in the mornings or early evenings!

*Remember turf needs to breathe and over-watering can cause fungal diseases, especially in the cooler months.

Seasonal Maintenance & Fertilising

TifTuf Bermuda turf, as the name suggests, has been scientifically bred to be TOUGH! It only requires one-third the amount of fertiliser than other turf varieties to maintain healthy growth. We recommend using a slow-release granular fertiliser at a third of the suggested rate, 3 times a year in spring, summer and autumn.

TifTuf thrives with about 4-6 hours of daily sun to thrive, so try to keep branches and leaves out of the way, allowing for maximum sunlight, especially in the winter months.

If your turf looks thin or patchy come springtime, October or November is the ideal time to aerate and fertilise your TifTuf lawn.

During the chilly Victorian winters, you may notice some of your lawn’s bright green natural colour. While TifTuf resists yellowing better than other Bermuda grass varieties, some people like to reinvigorate frost-affected or dormant grass with a liquid fertiliser containing a green dye, such as ColourGuard Lawn Tint by Lawn Solutions Australia. This product protects grass and locks in colour in a way that looks natural. Grass blades stained with these products grow back leaf tissue as normal and any excess green pigment washes away safely.

If your TifTuf lawn is feeling spongy underfoot it might need a dethatch. Dethatching is best done when the turf is actively growing and the weather is warm, November is usually an ideal time in Victoria to dethatch. A thick thatch layer can prevent nutrients, oxygen, and water from penetrating down into the root system and can cause fungal issues.

Couch Grass Like You’ve Never Seen Before

Bermuda TifTuf, also known as Tif Tuf or “Bermudagrass” in the US, is technically a couch variety, but it’s not just any couch. It’s the culmination of 22 years of research and selection from a pool of around 30,000 different Bermuda grass cultivars. This highly prized cultivar was released in 2014 by one of the world’s leading turf grass breeders.

This premium turf variety has quickly become a favourite for elite sports surfaces and domestic use, with around 93 million square metres sold in 2022 alone! While its roots are in the American market, this highly drought-tolerant turf has become a firm favourite in Australia, where it’s been used for golf courses, Aussie Rules ovals like Barossa Park Oval in Lyndoch SA (home of the Gather Round fixture), and even the lawn at the Sydney Opera House.

Extra High Drought Tolerance +

Extra High Drought Tolerance

TifTuf Hybrid Bermuda is in a league of its own in its ability to withstand drought conditions, which is great news if you’re seeking a turf that can stand up to Victoria’s hot and dry summers. Thanks to its extremely deep root system that is able to reach more than a metre below the surface, TifTuf taps into moisture reserves well below the topsoil, helping it stay greener for longer during dry, hot spells. After extensive independent testing, it became the first turf to be awarded Smart Drop certification (formerly Smart Approved WaterMark).

In addition to making it extremely drought tolerant, TifTuf Bermuda’s super fast root growth makes it one of the quickest turf types to establish. When laid in the warm season (spring or summer), it can start knitting in as soon as 7 days after laying, meaning you can back off watering sooner and get into your schedule of regular mowing earlier than with other lawn varieties.

Ultra High Wear Tolerance and Self-Repair Properties +

Ultra High Wear Tolerance and Self-Repair Properties

Bermuda TifTuf isn’t just tough on drought; it’s incredibly resilient in the face of heavy foot traffic from kids, four-legged friends, or even professional athletes. Thanks to its vigorous stolon and rhizome growth, TifTuf spreads quickly across the soil surface and beneath it, helping it fill in bare spots and recover from heavy use faster than other couch grasses.

Whether it’s for backyard footy, your pet’s playground, cricket grounds, football fields, or even putting greens and other high traffic areas, TifTuf’s resilience helps maintain a lush, uniform appearance year-round with minimal bare patches. Active families and sports turf managers alike are hard-pressed to find a tougher option than TifTuf turf. Melbourne residential and commercial turf users agree – this highly sought-after variety really is as tough as the name suggests.

TifTuf Hybrid Bermuda FAQs

How is TifTuf more drought-tolerant than other Bermuda grasses? +

TifTuf Bermuda hybrid was developed to withstand drought stress. Compared to other Bermuda grass varieties, it needs significantly less water to stay healthy and green thanks to its deep root system, which enables access to moisture from deeper in the soil.

Trials at the University of Georgia demonstrated 38% reductions in water usage (compared to other Bermuda varieties) when using TifTuf. Melbourne homeowners, landscapers and groundskeepers can be confident that their TifTuf grass, once properly established, will maintain its dense growth habit and great colour with minimal watering, even during periods of extreme heat and low rainfall.

Is it an invasive species? +

Yes, Bermuda TifTuf is regarded as an aggressive grass because of its dense coverage and ability to spread out through horizontal runners (stolons) above the surface and rhizomes that spread below the surface. The same properties that make it incredibly hardy and able to self-repair also mean it can infiltrate other areas if not kept in check. Regular edge trimming is recommended to prevent unwanted spread from home lawns into garden beds.

How can I stop it from spreading into garden beds? +

TifTuf’s aggressive lateral growth makes it great at bouncing back from damage, but on the flip side, it can also start to creep into areas you don’t want it to. As much as we love our TifTuf, when you spend time and effort planting flower beds the last thing you want is lawn creeping in where it isn’t meant to be. To manage this:

  • Install a physical barrier like edging or mowing strips (though stolons can still creep over time).
  • Use landscaping features like rocks or stepping stones as buffers.
  • Regularly edge and spot-treat escapes with glyphosate (e.g. Roundup).
  • Hand-pull runners early to prevent major spread.
  • In severe cases, shade covers can help restrict growth.

If you prefer a lower-maintenance option, consider a less invasive turf like Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo Turf.

How shade tolerant is TifTuf? +

It enjoys partial shade tolerance and is able to get by in areas of dappled shade (around 50%). This gives it an advantage over other warm-season grasses like VG Premium Eureka Kikuyu. To thrive it will require a minimum of 4-5 hours of direct sunlight per day. If your yard is particularly shady you might be better off choosing an alternative like Sir Walter Buffalo Turf.

When’s the best time to lay TifTuf turf in Victoria? +

The best time to lay TifTuf in Victoria is during the warmer months, which is from late spring through to early autumn. TifTuf establishes fastest when soil temperatures are consistently above 16°C, allowing the deep roots and dense stolons to develop properly. You can lay it in winter, but growth will slow right down, and you’ll need extra care to avoid waterlogging or frost damage.

How quickly does TifTuf establish after laying? +

TifTuf Hybrid Bermuda is one of the fastest-establishing couch grasses available. Under warm-season growing conditions, it can begin rooting into the soil within 7 days of installation. Full establishment typically takes 2–4 weeks depending on temperature and care, meaning less watering and earlier mowing compared to other varieties.

How much maintenance does TifTuf require? +

TifTuf Bermuda turf requires moderate maintenance. While it needs less watering and fertilising than many other grasses, it does require more frequent mowing, especially during the peak growing season. Mow regularly to foster a dense, healthy lawn. Seasonal fertilising and occasional dethatching will help maintain its strong growth and vibrant colour.

What’s the general best practice for the maintenance of a healthy Bermuda lawn? +

Water deeply but less often once established to encourage strong roots. Always water early morning or evening, and avoid overwatering in cooler months to prevent fungal issues.

Mow regularly to maintain a height of 15–30mm, aiming below 25mm to encourage lateral growth. Never remove more than a third of the blade at once.

Fertilise with a slow-release product three times a year at one-third the usual rate. Aerate in late spring or early summer to promote stronger growth, and dethatch if the lawn feels spongy.

Clear any overhead shade, apply pre-emergent herbicide in spring to block weeds, and treat visible weeds with post-emergent herbicide or hand removal. Keep an eye out for fungal diseases like brown patches and act quickly.

For a winter colour boost, you can use a turf-safe lawn pigment like ColourGuard.

What makes TifTuf different from other Australian couch grasses? +

TifTuf Bermuda stands out for its exceptional drought tolerance, using up to 38% less water than other couch varieties while maintaining strong colour and density. It establishes faster, repairs damage quicker thanks to its aggressive stolon and rhizome growth, and needs less fertiliser to stay healthy. Unlike many traditional couches, TifTuf also offers better shade tolerance (up to 50% daily sunlight) and superior wear resistance, making it ideal for high-traffic lawns in Australian conditions.
