StrathAyr Brings TifTuf Bermuda to the Nagambie Golf Club
At StrathAyr, we take pride in our commitment to provide top-tier turf for our customers while pushing the envelope in turf innovation. Recently, we delivered and installed washed TifTuf Hybrid Bermuda Turf maxi rolls to Nagambie Golf Club, marking a significant milestone for the state. Whilst TifTuf has been used on tee areas and fairways, this installation is the first time TifTuf Hybrid Bermuda Turf has been used for a putting surface in Victoria — and it’s already showing great promise.
The installation covers a total area of 456m² (19m x 23m) on a trial green at the regional golf course. Since installation, our team has visited the site twice, and we’re pleased to report that the turf has already established a strong root system, an encouraging sign that the grass is adapting well to its new environment.
TifTuf is a proven performer in sports fields across Australia, known for its drought tolerance, exceptional durability under high foot traffic, and versatility across both warm summer heat and colder winter frosts. Its superior wear tolerance allows it to thrive in conditions where other grasses would struggle, making it a great choice for high-performance sporting environments.
By using our patented turf washer technology, we can remove excess soil and organic matter, so the turf achieves an even cleaner, more consistent root zone and more rapid establishment when installed. This allows the grass to develop strong, deep roots more efficiently, leading to healthier, more resilient greens.
A Proven Performer: TifTuf’s Success Elsewhere
Nagambie Golf Club’s decision to trial TifTuf Hyrbid Bermuda Turf wasn’t made lightly. The team had been in contact with West Wyalong Golf Course, where TifTuf has been successfully used for over two years. West Wyalong’s greens, which are cut at 3mm and treated with Primo growth regulator, have been performing exceptionally well.
“TifTuf is definitely worth looking at if you are concerned with drought tolerance,” says West Wyalong Golf Course Superintendent, Scott Pettit. “We rarely need to hand-water our greens, even in high 30s temperatures, and there’s minimal need for fertiliser or chemicals with no disease or insect pressure. As long as you regularly groom and vertically cut to thin it out, it performs exceptionally well. Our members love it.”
This success story played a crucial role in Nagambie’s decision to move forward with their trial.
Nagambie’s Unique Challenges and TifTuf’s Solution
Nagambie Golf Club, like many golf courses in Australia, faces unique challenges when it comes to turf management. According to Shaun Spicer, the site contact at Nagambie and head of the project, water availability is a significant concern. “We rely on bore water, which is quite salty, and while we have a desalination plant, it becomes difficult to manage. TifTuf’s drought-tolerance and reduced chemical requirements made it an attractive choice for us,” Shaun explained.
For golf course superintendents facing similar challenges—whether it’s water scarcity, high maintenance costs, or the need for a more resilient turfgrass—
TifTuf Hybrid Bermuda offers a viable solution.
